The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
